What I Wanted When I Wanted You

I wanted to hold hands in the popcorn
of a new movie theater we could claim for our own,
not caring that kernels spilled between our seats.
I wanted to take turns reading romance novels
sitting together in the aisle of the bookstore,
laughing at the worst lines we could find.
I wanted to kiss the little crease
you get between your eyebrows when you frown
and watch it melt away
because I can do something to make you smile.
I wanted to know what it was like
to kiss you under a sky of stars
when I felt like they finally were looking
back down on us.
The stars deserve to see what you look like
when you’re being kissed.
